Dr. Courtney Andrews Discusses Dental Care for your Pet

By February 11, 2020 Uncategorized

Hi LAH Family, Dr Courtney here! For Dental Health month I’m going to be talking to you about a few of the key dental facts; starting with dental home care and regular professional cleaning. Without proper cleaning bacteria form a film on the tooth (plaque) and can lead to infection of the gums (gingivitis), and around the tooth roots (periodontitis).

Daily home care gets rid of the daily build up of bacteria. Gold stars if you can brush your pet’s teeth, but this is not always possible. Dental diets and appropriate dental chews are the next best thing.  A good rule of thumb is to look for the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) seal indicating the product has been proven to control plaque.

However, as with our own tooth brushing, it is not 100% effective. There are places that we simply cannot reach with home care and regular professional cleaning is needed. At Lockerby Animal Hospital we are able remove plaque and tartar from between teeth, and below the gum line to give your pet a clean and healthy mouth.

During February, LAH is giving free Oral Exams to assess your pet’s mouth, discuss a home care plan and if it’s time for a professional cleaning. Contact the clinic for more information and to book your appointment.
